CBD COP 16 Event: Youth it or lose it!

Traditional knowledge transmission for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity

Join us for a youth-led conversation about how traditional knowledge strengthens youth's connection to their territories and safeguards biodiversity at CDB COP16 on October, 24th.

Communities worldwide hold traditional knowledge that is crucial to halting biodiversity loss. However, this knowledge—often passed down through elders—is at risk, as younger generations show less interest and increasingly leave their territories in pursuit of other opportunities. It is critical that youth not only value and acquire this knowledge, but also apply it to conserve their lands and create sustainable opportunities for themselves. Tropenbos International , we developed a fire management plan for the Tropenbos International network in tropical regions has long collaborated with youth and elders from Indigenous, Tribal, and local communities in tropical regions to preserve and harness traditional knowledge in some of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes.

During the CBD COP 16, we will share the insights from this work through a panel discussion led by youth from Southeast Asia, the Amazon region and Africa. For one hour, these young leaders, joined by elders, will share how the exchange of knowledge across generations has strengthened their connection to their territories, supporting sustainable use and benefiting biodiversity.

This youth-led conversation will explore what young people need to realize their vision for the future. It will dive into ways to boost motivation and highlight opportunities for young people to thrive within their territories, all while safeguarding biodiversity.

Join us: Simultaneous English and Spanish interpretations will be available. Thursday 24th of October 11:45 am - 1:00 pm Sala Multiple 2, Camara de Comercio de Cali (Cl 8 #3-14, San Pedro, Cali, Colombia)
